A Gem in Oak Park

THE JEWELRY
One glance at the jewelry of Laura Kitsos and you realize many things – it’s truly unique, eye-catching and she doesn’t have one style like so many designers do. It may not be easy to spot a Kitsos piece because she is always coming up with new pieces that are one-of-a-kind. She blends precious gems like rubies, sapphires and tourmaline, and metals including 14-karat and 18-karat gold and sterling silver. A Kitsos piece is timeless, yet current. She also carries handpicked vintage brooches and re-worked vintage pieces that bring a touch of nostalgia to her jewelry.
THE JEWELRY OPENING OF GEM, A JEWELRY BOUTIQUE
On September 10 th, Gem, A Jewelry Boutique opened its doors in Oak Park, Illinois, where Laura Kitsos resides with her husband and two boys. At this private affair, guests were able to join Kitsos in the opening of her dream – her very own boutique, where you feel as if you are in one large jewel box. Located at 159 N. Marion in Oak Park’s historic downtown (only about 30 minutes from Chicago). “The soothing atmosphere reminds me of sitting at my mother’s vanity trying on pieces of beautiful jewelry,” says the designer. With beautiful high ceilings, hardwood floors, upholstered benches, vintage vanities and a unique display layout, this boutique is truly special. You can also shop worldwide at www.laurakitsos.com.
ABOUT LAURA KITSOS
“My jewelry came about in the mid-90's when it seemed so many of the jewels out there were tiny and very understated. I wanted a statement from my pieces, making the jewelry more of a focus and not an afterthought to simply blend in. I create each piece individually, by hand, sometimes never making the same piece twice.
I use metalsmithing to hand make my bezels, rings, and many components. I also know several beading techniques, which allow me to combine metalsmithing and beading skills. I believe this produces a unique piece in the end.
I try not to focus too much on trend, however being a fashion conscious person, it's hard not to let it seep in. I want my pieces to feel timeless; heirloom jewelry, if you will. I am constantly trying new things, so my line tends to change along the way. If something is in your sight, it may be gone next week. Designing and making jewelry makes me happy—something I love to do. I hope that each piece conveys that to the wearer and the observer as well!”
