DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT:
Custo and David Dalmau of Custo Barcelona
CUSTO (pictured) and DAVID DALMAU launched their fashion careers in the early 1980s, and in 1996 premiered their signature line CUSTO BARCELONA. The world has been beating a path to their atelier ever since. The brothers chose the American market to unveil their new line, and their intuition didn’t betray them. Their brightly patterned, intricately detailed designs caught the attention of fashion stylists and wardrobe designers, and their distinctive t-shirts became de rigueur among Hollywood’s elite.
Ironically, the original impetus of the Dalmau’s fashion empire was a globe-trotting motorcycle odyssey that culminated in California, where the brothers were inspired by the colorful, innovative t-shirts they saw accessorizing the West Coast lifestyle. They returned to Spain, and the rest is fashion history. CUSTO BARCELONA has received numerous design awards in Europe, including GQ and Marie Claire’s Designer of the Year awards, and has become a staple of New York City’s annual Fashion Week ever since its debut showing, a riot of colors, fabrics, and patterns that ran counter to the prevailing minimalism of other collections, creating a groundswell that continues to build momentum.
CUSTO BARCELONA is carried in fine department stores on five continents, and has a celebrity following that includes Christina Aguilera, Sandra Bullock, Penelope Cruz, Natalie Portman, and Julia Roberts. With the Old World at their feet, and the New World on its knees, Custodio and David Dalmau have come full circle, returning to the city where their dream was first born. Los Angeles, inevitably, will fall under the spell of CUSTO BARCELONA as well. Nothing can stop an idea whose time has come. Revolution complete.
