Heather Crosby Dishes on her line hmc…
After growing up in the Washington D.C. area and attending and graduating college in West Virginia, designer Heather Crosby did what any self driven young professional would do- she sold her truck and moved to Chicago (a city she fell in love with to work as a graphic designer.)
Not ignoring her creative talents, Crosby has ventured into many creative outlets including painting exhibitions, handbag design with partner Kathy Beymer for Carry Handbags and her solo endeaver for hmc jewelry design.
Constantly inspired by her surrounding and flare for creating things with recycled and unique materials, Heather Crosby insists upon taking the nostalgic, serendipitous and surprising nuances of daily life to incorporate them in her unique designs.
Factio Magazine: How is your jewelry unique from other jewelry designers? What sets your
jewelry line apart from others?
Heather Crosby for hmc jewelry: The majority of my work is handcarved and handpainted insuring that each piece is absolutely one-of-a-kind. I love to hear it when people respond to
a piece with "I've never seen something like that before". What sets hmc apart from other designers? Mainly, It's the powerful but very wearable design of the pieces.
FM: Do you follow trends or are you into more classic looks concerning
jewelry?
HC: I enjoy some trends and I enjoy classics. Change is so important for
growing. I'm always interested in creating something new or a fresh twist on
the old, more importantly pieces that are always noticed. Whatever happens
to come into my head gets created or sketched on a napkin for later. This is
a process completely independent of "what's hot and what's not" and
completely in-line with development and growth.
FM: What are your future goals. Where do you see yourself in five years?
HC: I have many personal and professional goals. However, life is full of
surprises and I insist on staying flexible in order to be my best and to get
the most out of my life. I see myself sticking by the list below in five
years. The rest will fall into place.
I want… Happiness
I want… to be creating
I want… to be enjoying my family and friends
I want… to be traveling
I want… to be learning
I want… to stay true to my instincts
I want… to be having fun
FM: How did you come up with the name of your jewelry line?
HC: They are my initials. They stand for my independence, my core and my
history. It felt natural to name the line hmc.
FM: Do you people ever stop you on the street about your jewelry? If so,
what happens?
HC: Every time I wear something out. It is a terrific feeling when someone
responds to my work. I also get wonderful feedback from customers who say
they wore their piece out and were stopped in the street or approached out
at a bar or restaurant and received compliments.
