“There’s nothing new about the concept
of women’s fashion…it’s as old as time. The concept
of the designer, however, is always new. I feel that a woman’s
wardrobe should be a seamless blend of texture, color and style
that exudes glamour, elegance, sensuality, sophistication and femininity.”
James De Colón
Factio Magazine:
What is the motivating force that prompted you to become a designer?
James De Colón: My motivation for designing
is based on the dreams and aspirations that can be achieved through
musicals and old movies through vivid color schemes and classic
designs. Originally, I wanted to be an actor performing in broadway
musicals, but I was heavily influenced by those
particular movies because it prompted creativity that could establish
a newer perspective.
FM: What
is your area of focus for your fall 2003 collection?
James De Colón: My focus for this season
deals with a spanish influence integrated with fabrics such as wool
jersey that motivate the particular spanish design I want to create
for the fall collection of 2003. Being of Puerto Rican descent,
I try to maintain certain flavors in the designs that would reflect
my heritage.
FM: How does your collection set you apart from
other young designers?
James De Colón: I try to include instead
of exclude young designers. In my few years as a professional designer,
I have made an effort to involve and foster younger designers in
the field whenever possible. Some of the best motivation for designing
comes from youthfulness, but I combine my heritage, years of experience
and focus on classic design to make me more noticeable in the field
of design.
FM: How do you implement educational aspects (i.e.
students, classes) within De Colon Designs?
James De Colón: Since I believe in education
and that it is important for success, I have at least five staff
members that are interning with me from different schools to attain
their higher level of education such as undergraduate/graduate degrees.
Also, I teach formal model training on the weekends to help young
people who want to be in the modeling industry but need some type
of guidance on model etiquette.
FM: Since you are a Latino designer, what are your
thoughts about being Latino in the fashion industry?
James De Colón: I feel that there aren't
enough Latino designers within the fashion industry that are recognized
for their talent and creativity. It may be true that the industry
is plagued with racism, but I believe that talent can overpower
negativity. I believe that once I am able to make major progress
within De Colon Designs, I will be able to contribute to the growing
list of Latino designers on a national and international level.
FM: Do you have a design philosophy for creating
your designs?
James De Colón: My design philosophy is
to look at fabric instead of trends to inspire creativity. Once
I get an idea from observing the color and texture of the fabric,
I am inspired to design. Usually, once I get started, my designs
take on a life of its own.
FM: What is your ultimate vision for De Colón
Designs?
James De Colón: My vision is to be known
as a great Latino designer and have several boutiques throughout
the U.S. and Europe. I would like to inspire other designers of
color to be recognized as well. My legacy for De Colón designs
is to inspire and make women constantly look and feel "flawless".
