ANDY WARHOL/SUPERNOVA: Stars, Death, and Disasters 1962-1964
March 18 – June 18, 2006
More than 25 examples of early silkscreen paintings are presented from one of the first American artists to investigate the cultural obsession of celebrities and disasters. Warhol’s iconic serial images of celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, and Elvis Presley are juxtaposed with his evocative and at times disturbing newspaper images of car crashes and other horrifying disasters. Focusing exclusively on 1962 to 1964, the exhibition examines the point in Warhol's career when he shifted his practice from hand painted reproductions to the mechanical photo silkscreen process.
