Marie Chouinard

Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago proudly presented Compagnie Marie Chouinard: Orpheus and Eurydice. The tragic ballet follows the lives of the Greek myth Orpheus, the first poet, and his beloved new wife Eurydice. Marie Chouinard articulates her intense signature style through this latest work that dives into emotional expressions of idea, creation, eternity, and loss. The performance follows Orpheus to the underworld where he tries to save his wife, who has died after being bitten by a snake. Hades allows Eurydice to leave as long as she walks behind Orpheus, and he does not look back at her during the journey’s entirety. However, Orpheus’s excitement gets the best of him, and as he turns back to look at his wife, she disappears forever. Accomplished dancers skillfully recreated the moving story. Marie Chouinard expertly highlighted the poetic performance using dramatic lighting, experimental theatre, and persuasive body movement. The MCA Stage hosted Compagnie Marie Chouinard: Orpheus and Eurydice Friday-Sunday April 17-19, 2009. Each night hosted a different show-sponsored event. Friday, April 17, featured an opening celebratory cocktail hour and dinner. The following night, Saturday, April 18, Compagnie Marie Chouinard hosted a post-show talk. Then on Sunday April 19, ticket-holding guests were invited to attend the Workshop: Compagnie Marie Chouinard: Creative Process and Repertory.
