A Gala to Remember
by Melissa Maynard and Litz Roll

On November 18th, the Field Associates of the Field Museum hosted A Capital Celebration: The Couture and Culture of Jacqueline Kennedy.

Gala-goers enjoyed the top-of-the-line of everything...including drinks, appetizers and hors d'oeuvres and a strolling supper. The evening kept on going with tunes from the Stu Hirsh Orchestra that got people out of the gorgeous table settings and on to the dance floor.

In Celebration of a Spectacular Woman

Guests were able to enjoy the incredible exhibit (Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years), where 70 of her most precious garments and accessories were on view. We were very impressed with Jackie's exhibit at The Field Museum. Throughout the exhibit, you really got to know the incredible woman ...Jacqueline Kennedy. She spoke French and Spanish, and her command of the written languages were exemplary. Furthermore, she charmed everyone around her with her elegant taste and social finesse. Her dresses were lovely all the way around, from the Oleg Cassinis to the Balenciagas to the Diors.

She was also versatile and modern adapting to her environments. For example, she wore a sleeveless suit in Colombia and a sarong inspired silk gown in India. She rode horses as a child and then she moved up to camels and elephants. She met diplomats and presidents around the world and was a true cultural inspiration the world over.

The Tantalizing Delectables...

The event, catered by Levy Events Catering spun off dishes Jacqueline Kennedy herself would be pleased with.

For the VIP reception, guests enjoyed a caviar bar with imported and domestic caviar, Charcuterie - cured and smoked meats, like Parma Prosciutto, Molinari Dry Italian Salami Salaametti and Coppa, Mortadella. Gourmet sauces with accompaniments of caperberries, cornichons, gherkins and gourmet mustards were on hand to garnish the world-class meat.

Guests also enjoyed fine cheeses both Domestic and European like Humbolt Fog, St. Andre served with bread sticks, New York flatbreads and assorted Lavosh crackers garnished with dried fruits and a selection of flavored honeys.

Passed Hors d' oeuvres included tantalizing Mini New England Lobster Rolls, Mini Beef Wellington, Maryland Crab Cakes with Remoulade Sauce, Cream of Tomato Soup Shooters. The VIP specialty drinks included French 75, Black Tie Martini, Tom Collins spirits.

The strolling buffet included Carved Tenderloin of Beef and Whole Smoked Turkey (condiments including whipped Horseradish, Tomato Brandy Mayonnaise and Gourmet Mustard), Smoked Salmon (condiments of diced tomato and red onion and more) and Mini Caramelized Onion Tartlet...

The Gift Bag...

Guests left that evening with beautiful Jackie-esque stationary done-up with pill box hats and jackets with clean lines...what a night! For those that didn't attend the gala, big time sponsor Marshall Field's is offering exclusive exhibition-inspired products that Jacqueline Kennedy would have loved. Shop Marshall Field's State Street store or their Water Tower store in Chicago or simply call 1.800.MFIELDS (while supplies last).

Save the date: The next must-go gala is Friday June 10, 2005, celebrating Jungles: Photographs by Frans Lanting. The 5th anniversary of Sue's arrival at The Field Museum and Dinosaur Dynasty: Discoveries from China.
