Chez Target Pooch

The difference between a fad and a trend is that one passes in a flash and the other lingers to either fade away gradually or turn in to a fashion.

A fashion obviously is that special look or an item that takes a global magnitude much like the bohemian skirt that swept all five continents this summer, in its various forms, lengths and colors.

When canine clothing first started to make a buzz in the media I thought it would be a one hit wonder. Paris Hilton would sport her dog all dolled up for a season or two, we would all find it amusing and then that would be the end of it, somebody new would be off to something else; a new fad. Imagine my awe when I walked into to Target, the emblem of Middle America and found an Isaac Mizrahi Dog Trench Coat for only $14.99.

This was the ultimate confirmation that Dog Fashion has indeed become a fashion. It had trickled down from a celebrity whim to the streets of America, where the girl next door was just as keen on dressing up her pet. Dog specialty stores were popping up everywhere lately, like mushrooms after a spring rain, but the fact that Target carries canine ready to wear is a brake through. A new market has risen; it has even embedded itself in the society to a certain extent for such a mass-market store to carry the items.

Back to Isaac Mizrahi’s Doggy trench, there it was, small, cute and trendy, but that wasn’t all, it was just the beginning. There were oodles of dog accessories and garb to marvel at; Blue and Silver Reflective Dog Jacket by Michael Graves, and how about Pet and People Matching Umbrellas for the rainy days. If you have been dreaming of taking up a few dance classes but lack a partner, now you can boogie with your pet, just get him or her the Party Time Pet Tutu and the both of you can dance the night away.

On the other hand if your dog has a high pedigree and needs something classier, Target also carries The Suit for Dogs. The list goes on, there are Camp Canine Dog Tees and a Room with a View Pet House, you will even find a Princess Dog Bedding Collection. Prices are quite reasonable considering the sometimes outrageously expensive pet apparel at the dog specialty boutiques, which can amount to hundreds of dollars per a canine sweater. Most dog fashions at Target are between $14 and $30. You will probably be overwhelmed by the amount of choice in this department. Who would have known?
