Moda Athena: It's All Greek for Fashion Week

The second international fashion meeting held in Athens, Moda Athena, was held the week of March 18th-23rd to centralize the Greek fashion sector and also to provide a platform for designers to become a part of the international fashion business.

Some of the most respected members of the international fashion scene came for Moda Athena, such as Arkadius, Diego Dolcini, Giambattista Valli, Anna Ruohonen, Vivia (granddaughter of Salvatore Ferragamo), Fiona (third generation Swarovski family member), and the honorable guest, Katie Sumner.

This season, designers created new twists to traditional Greek apparel. Models looked like modern Aphrodites appearing in tunics and long airy gowns.

A pre-opening party was held on Thursday, March 17th, at the downtown Athenian venue called Alekos. The official opening was actually on Friday, March 18th at the Cultural Center “Hellenic Cosmos. Greek Parliament member Mrs. Elena Kountoura was host of the evening’s charitable dinner that was dedicated to raising awareness about breast cancer.

Penelope Zagora, Dukas and Pantelis Mitsu were among the first to present their new designs on Saturday, March 19th. After the catwalks were over for the day, a private party was held at the Orizontas Club on Lycabbetus Hill to celebrate the arrival of designer Diego Dolcini.

Greek supermodel Viki Koulianou was Dolcini’s guest at his fashion show, which ended the day on Monday, March 21st. Afterwards there was a party held at Destijl to celebrate Dolcini’s birthday and the arrival of Sting’s daughter, Katie Sumner. Greek newscaster Yorgos Liangas, Greek television personality Ilias Psinakis, and Maria Bucellati were among those present at the party.

Greek pop singer Peggy Zina was the surprise guest star and hostess of the Fiona Winter Studio show produced by Orwell Milano on Tuesday, March 22nd.

The Angelos Frentzos fashion show ended the Moda Athena on Wednesday, March 23rd. Instead of models walking the catwalk, Frentzos had personalities from the Greek entertainment industry wearing the clothes. Participants included Katerina Moutsatsou, Yorgos Chraniotis, Maria Solomou, Yannis Tsimitselis, Faye Xyla and Viki Voliotou. Guests of Moda Athena, including Lakis Gavalas, Peggy Rizou, and Maria Signori went to the post-show party that was held at the Cultural Center “Hellanic Cosmos.”

Moda Athena by Nova was the result of the cooperation between the D.I. Moda Athena and Nova. Supporters of the event included the Hellenic Board of Touristic Development and the Hellenic Board of Tourism (EOT), the Municipality of Piraeus-DEPEP, the Organization of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises and Handicrafts (EOMMEX), the Greek National Trade Federation and the Chamber of Commerce & Industry of Piraeus.

Sponsors included C-Ice, Skyy Vodka, P.Daraklis ABEE, Coca Cola Light, and Cafe Danesi. Additional supporters included Genesis Marketing Services, Interni by Moda Bagno, Jabre, Hotel Grande Bretagne, Swarovski, Akto, Pan-Sik, Aktina Travel, Kostantinos Xatzis hair, Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, Olympic Airlines, and Despina Miraraki.
