Recycled Fashion – Don’t Discard
Your Potential Couture Creation
The thought of recycling fashion to some may be an interesting
concept. But, as Earth Day quickly approaches, students all over
the country are taking what we normally discard without a second
thought – such as bottle caps, bubble wrap and even milk caps
and creating attractive ensembles using creativity and their very
own innovation.
The students at Delta College in Saginaw, Michigan are busy getting
ready for their recycled fashion debut at their annual environmental
fashion show and museum. Environmental concerns are a serious issue
nowadays and this allows students the opportunity to be creative,
while showcasing a seriousness of reusing and recycling. You never
know, by reducing, re-using and recycling you could come up with
a savvy couture creation! Don’t discard the possibilities
next time you’re throwing away that bubble wrap – it
could become an instant hit.
Delta’s Earth Day History
With increasing social and political importance being placed on
environmental issues, Delta College has the opportunity each year
to demonstrate its commitment to the environment. The event is spearheaded
by a small group of college employees whose passion for the environment
is their motivation. The Earth Day celebration garners participation
from K-12 and college students, vendors, community groups, faculty
and staff.
Earth Day offers a full day of educational entertainment to inform,
educate, and entertain participants.
The coordination of Earth Day events is year round and its benefits
resound well beyond the actual event, including invitations for
speaking engagements on recycling and other environmental issues.
Planning for the 2003 Earth Day event is well underway. Stephanie
Mills, a passionate leader for environmental consciousness, a powerful
and influential speaker and author is the keynote presenter. ‘Who
Says You Can’t Change the World?’ is the official Earth
Day 2003 theme.
The annual celebration helps to raise awareness of environmental
issues and enhances the college’s visibility as an ecological
advocate within the community. It has been well attended with audiences
of over 400 college, high school, and elementary students, as well
as the general public. The event has consistently attracted attention
from local, state, and out-of-state television, radio, and newspapers.
