Borris Powell Fashion Show

Borris is In

As the crowd grew outside up-and-coming fashion designer Borris Powell’s show, as did the anticipation and buzz. “What,” several show goers questioned, “is in
and what is out?”

Well there is no question about it,
Borris is in.

The Alabama-born designer showcased his latest collection Saturday, July 14th at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel and Towers. This presentation was not only the second public showing of his work, but the culmination of one year of private study.

Powell moved to Chicago 10 years ago to study design at Columbia College, but like many found the pressure of daily expenses overwhelming. Working in retail management the past five years, Powell has spent spare time taking private lessons with some of Chicago’s industry favorites including Tchad Elliot, designer of clothing and interiors.

Saturday’s show displayed not only Powell’s flare for fashion, but his passion for life as well. The crowd, including his mother and grandmother (who he credits for his interest in women’s fashion and style) couldn’t help but clap their hands and tap their feet as live soul-filled renditions of hit songs such as Celine Dion’s Power of Love, added life to the stone-faced Elite models (including American’s Next Top Model’s Sarah Vonderhaar and Felicia Kristine) who marched down the runway in this season’s hottest trend (red lips) and Powell’s one of a kind designs! Rich in color and texture Powell’s designs, from eveningwear to swimwear, were as lively as the crowd and the music they were dancing to. With his designs Powell, who claims to have found himself here in Chicago, has found a place in the fashion industry as well.
