Will Meyer for Oscar de la Renta

Unbeknownst to this writer, Will Meyer was test-driving a new BMW, expertly navigating the twists and turns of the roads, while flawlessly
elucidating his design aesthetic and what it’s like working for Oscar de la Renta. Will Meyer, an exceptionally talented roadsman, also happens to be one of two Principals of the New York architectural firm Meyer Davis. The firm is the renowned mastermind behind the design of
Oscar de la Renta stores worldwide, as well as some of the hottest new gyms, hotels and restaurants. The firm also designs for a coveted, esoteric residential clientele.

Oscar de la Renta’s boutiques are well-known for their strong combination of classical and minimalist design, a signature of Meyer Davis. The treatment behind the boutiques is simple, as Meyer explained, “What we try to do is to try and take our own ego out of the project and channel the designer. In the case of Oscar de la Renta stores, we try to think what Oscar would think. And we merge their sensibilities with our attention to detail.”

Everything that comes out of the Meyer Davis firm has a tailored look without a single superfluous detail; each design aspect must have a raison d’etre. With the Oscar de la Renta boutiques, Meyer clarified, “Whenever we add a layer of décor, it’s always something that comes from Oscar’s Dominican Republic style, something of himself. It’s really driven from lots of imagery we get from his lifestyle.”

Meyer attributes much of the firm’s success to its ego-free design process, which enables them to work intimately with each client and imbue the design with the client’s own aesthetic. Meyer Davis is also defined by an unparalleled and extravagant attention to detail. “What we hope our projects do is raise the visibility of our clients; in that respect all our projects do not look alike. Each project really reflects
our clients’ aspirations,” opined Meyer.

It was only as we were rapping up our phone interview that Meyer mentioned he was pulling into the dealership. He apologized for the background noise, proving his amazing talent is also coupled with a modesty and politeness rarely encountered. It’s the attention to detail in every aspect that makes
all the difference.
