Factio Magazine: What are your style tips for holiday dressing?
Tracey Mayer: Fabrics in rich jeweled colors and texture…brocades, velvets, furs..faux or real, with a touch of sparkle. Do not overdo it with the bling bling…give them one or two pieces to fixate on!

FM: What key fashion pieces do you have your eye on this season?
TM: For winter, I believe your coat says it all; therefore, I have an extensive outerwear wardrobe. I am always looking for coats and suit jackets made with fabulous fabrics in striking colors, with great buttons and unique detailing.

FM: What’s your biggest fashion vice…What do you have to have every season?
TM: Shoes, shoes, shoes… and, of course jewelry! Black, brown, and camel are great colors for shoes and boots, but there is nothing like a pair of pumps in red, fuchsia, or jade!

FM: What is a fashion no-no, when attending special events, galas, and more?
TM: Do not wear shoes that are brand new and never worn; choose shoes that you can walk in! A woman’s confidence is expressed through her walk.

FM: What is your signature style?
TM: Traditional yet unpredictable.

FM: Define the style in your city. Which ladies from which city worldwide do you think have or had the most impeccable style?
TM: The style in Chicago has always been safe but it is changing now that local designers are being recognized. There are amazing boutiques that have opened and continue to open which serve as perfect outlets for the emerging designers.

Diana Vreeland is a favorite of mine because she was not born into wealth and her career did not start until she was into her 30’s. She always thought outside the box. Coco Chanel had a style of her own, and it started because she could not afford to buy the “real thing” so she made her own clothing. There was a hidden luxury to her pieces, a non-ostentatious presentation. I remember reading about Elsie de Wolfe and being impressed because she focused on dressing well and staying healthy to compensate for her rather unattractive natural looks. She became an interior decorator at the age of 40, went on to establish practical decorating, and introduced the idea of a cocktail party as well as faux finishes to walls.

Now, many people are labeling the young stars as style icons, however I believe the title of style icon can only belong to a woman who has earned the title over a period of many years.

FM: How long or how fast can you get ready for an event?
TM: With my short hair, I can throw myself together pretty darn quickly! If I have my wardrobe completely planned, including accessories and shoes, I can be ready in 30 minutes.

FM: What would people be most surprised to know about you?
TM: I almost studied aeronautical engineering in college.
